Chanting?

Perhaps you mean this insane show that arbuthnot calls "a blaze of jamming"?

Yes, thank you. I think the crowd was happy enough, and very happy after the wait. I like '68 because it seems at times the energy can hardly be contained.

Hey, I was wondering if the Carousel Ballroom was reaaly on Grosvenor Square in SF? I forgot where on the web I read it but did find a nice website:

The triangle block that the Carousel Ballroom building sits on (it's still there) is nothing special, and has no open space, so I kinda doubt it was ever called anything in particular.

They must have been singing about the Grosvenor Square in London (Scarlet Begonias). Hunter did write some songs in London.

hey CPW, been meaning to ask you, ever hear of a one album band from the day named "Rumpelstiltskin"? on the cover there's a comic strip about a singing giraffe who refuses to sing with the opera prima donna, ("you have got to be joking, mezzo-soprano ain't my scene, baby" or something silly like that)...some of the songs, "Make Me Make You"..."Bring in Mr. Joe cause he'll know, cause he'll know" (Witness For The Defense)...a song that teaches a recipe, "Pate de Foie Gras"...another song about a retired fighter pilot who "knows exactly what it's like to be reborn, through long and lonely nights he remembers how his spitfire climbed and soared..."

long out of press and a real bitch to Google (either a million links to the fairy tale comes up, or a completely unrelated band from the 80's)

you stumped me, midnight sun... that's one I haven't heard of, and yep, Google took me everywhere you said it would!

Ah, but then I flexed my search muscle (hey, zip it!) and found the recent reissue (2007) of this rarity on Repertoire, who provide this info:

"A uniquely talented British heavy rock band, Rumplestiltskin was the brainchild of American producer
Shel Talmy. It was his idea to form a ‘supergroup’ that might rival the highly successful outfits that dominated the early Seventies, such as Status Quo and Led Zeppelin.

Instead of picking young, untried rockers, Talmy brought together highly experienced professional session men. Among them was drummer Clem Cattini, who recalls the evolution of the group in a special interview for the informative liner notes.

Although ‘Rumplestiltskin’ wasn’t a hit, it was nevertheless a serious project, as can be heard on the eight powerful tracks on this CD re-issue of a classy album, first released in 1970. The band also featured singer Peter Lee Stirling, who later scored a hit single with ‘Beautiful Sunday’ under the name of Daniel Boone.

Original vinyl artwork in square CD digi- sleeve format (card wallet – no plastic) plus inserted fold-out poster. Booklet with authoritative and extensive liner notes by respected author and journalist Chris Welch. Expertly remastered – superb sound."

Sounds good!

ya, that's it! thanks for the search, and a cd re-issue no less!

been about 30 years since i've seen or heard it...i remember an abundance of open E chord scratchy/funky guitar, eclectic lyrical subject matter throughout, and the name Peter Green (somehow doubt it was the Fleetwood dude)...well performed, but definitely not the regular supergroup fare, more subtle, sort of an underground feel to it...somehow one of my brothers ended up with an already worn out LP in the early 70's, during the years that followed none of us could figure out who those guys were or even where they were from, and the bullshit comic strip album jacket only made everything seem all the more absurd...

thanks again, way cool!

btw, stumbled across this thread a while back...who else cept maybe fireeagle would have seen the end of it?

...man, that's far out...

a recent archive addition worth hearing is the interview with Garcia at 710 Ashbury in 1967:

http://www.archive.org/details/gd1967-XX-XX.sbd.bershaw.5419.shnf

Topics discussed include The Monkees, Hells Angels, rearranging "Somebody To Love" and playing on Surrealistic Pillow sessions, Quicksilver, cops, funniest moments at the Acid Tests and more.

Listen as Garcia woofs down Oreo cookies (provided by Mountain Girl)...
